The "Two Thumbs Up" gentleman on my homepage, Frankie Firme, is a super great chicano out of Los Angeles, and a radio personality and DJ - and excellet writer for an Internet magazine; look in Google or Bing. He is better known for his saying of, "it's a brown thing", great voice too. Also, if you are a fan of the Garcia Brothers I'm playing one of their tracks right now ... (if possible?, somebody out there tell me what's the name of that song since I don't have the CD) ... my MP3 playing is a 'tape-2-CD format' I did some months ago. I also added this on my homepage: ... just something about this track that I like. I don't know what it is, could be a Brown thing! LOL! No, it could be a TEJANO thing! Maybe it's an Arizona thing! Oh well, TGIF gente! I'm public domain after 6:00pm! Party on whatever you do! __________________ "Music is a powerful way of telling people what you're about." |

Reply with quote | #2 | I was washing my lunch dishes before my wife gets home and kills me, and I figured out why I like this track of the GBros:
The voices. They sound real good together/and as a conjunto, and the singing/words/phrases are fragmented at times, yet pleasing to the ear; to the audience. The bass player. Key factor here. He is playing what I call, "skimming the note and cutoff, skimming the note and cutoff", that is, the bass notes are not too short or sustained too long either. He is playing them on just the right cue and punctuation - and in a controlled volume mode and state as well. Results: pure tejano. I cannot stress "volume control enough here" because it is so crucial and of major importance overall. The voices in this track for example have to be dominant and just a notch above the group; the group must lower their volumes until the intro comes around again; or in specific counterpoint runs if required.
Of course playing for a "live audience is different than recordings", true, but still, if a group can have real good sound engineering and control on stage, and from every member of the group, then it's more appealing to the crowd in so many different ways, and what I'm trying to say in this paragraph.
In my music years and path, I have met just a handful of bass players that can actually play like this, but believe me, when it's done to perfection and to the tee, it sounds so beautiful and pure tejanito, danceable, and makes one hell of a difference in any group. Try it next time!
Have a nice TGIF!

Reply with quote | #3 | Hey Mike, That MP3 is Poppurri Ranchero of the Garcia Bros debut CD Cuatro Paredes. I believe it was written by Nick Villareal,. And it featured the late Jimmy Garcia on lead Vocal and accordion. __________________ If you can't sing -- dance. or Play the accordion... |

Reply with quote | #4 | Thanks John!, you are a real good tejano-buddy indeed!
Sadly, yes, I remember when Jimmy died.
Well, at least I got the name and info I need, and I'll buy it when I get to Texas in a matter of weeks - then play it all the way back to PHX! __________________ "Music is a powerful way of telling people what you're about." |
