Jimmy Gonzalez y Mazz, Pesado and Marco Antonio Solis were among the big names in the regional Mexican field of the 2009 list of Latin Grammy winners held Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Mazz won the best Tejano CD category with their latest album The Legend Continues...La Continuacin... Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz, released on Freddie Records.

Mazz beat

out a field which also included familiar names such as Recordando Josefa, by Avizo; Generations, Grupo Vida; Conjuntazzo, Joel Guzman & Sarah Fox; Freedom Tour 2008, Jaime y Los Chamacos; and All The Way Live!, Jay Perez.

For more than a decade, Jimmy Gonzalez y Mazz have been one of the leading groups in the Tejano field, producing memorable albums and drawing big crowds on the touring circuit.

All of the entries in the Tejano category were notable works including Joel Guzmans Conjuntazo, a folk, mostly acoustic album that Guzman called Americana conjunto.

Guzman and Fox won both the American Grammy and the Latin Grammy for their previous folk album Polkas, Gritos y Acoprdeones.

Despite losing to Mazz, Guzman said getting a Grammy nomination is significant because while we have always been involved with many artists (as producers, collaborators), we have always continued to put out high quality works like 'Short Stories' and 'Latinology.' It always feels great to be acknowledged for our body of work."

His partner Sarah Fox was also elated.

"I am ecstatic simply because it feels great to finally be acknowledged as one of the artists and not just a participant," said Fox.

DeAnda, a veteran of the South Texas conjunto scene, also noted the value of a nomination.

The Grammy nomination is important because it means a lot of exposure, a lot of marketing opportunities for us. It also tells people were still here, still in the game.

Overall, the 2009 Latin Grammys belonged to the alt-reggaeton-rap group Calle 13 which won all five of the categories it was nominated in, including record and album of the year for "Los De Atrs Vienen Conmigo."

The group paid tribute to the folk singer Mercedes Sosa when they accepted record of the year and dedicated the win to her memory. Sosa died in October.

The Latin Grammys were held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and broadcast live on the Univision Network.

In other regional Mexican categories, Vicente Fernandez won the best Ranchera album field, with his latest CD Primera Fila, edging out Shaila Drcal, Jos Feliciano, Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles and Diego Verdaguer.

Best Banda honors went to Alacranes Musical for their Tu Inspiracin while best Grupero was split between 15x22, Caballo Dorado and No Molestar, Marco Antonio Solis.

Grupo Pesado took best Norteo lbum for their CD Slo Contigo and best regional song went to Solis for his No Molestar.

It's a brown thing!

The "Two Thumbs Up" gentleman on my homepage, Frankie Firme, is a super great chicano out of Los Angeles, and a radio personality and DJ - and excellet writer for an Internet magazine; look in Google or Bing. He is better known for his saying of, "it's a brown thing", great voice too.

Also, if you are a fan of the Garcia Brothers I'm playing one of their tracks right now ... (if possible?, somebody out there tell me what's the name of that song since I don't have the CD) ... my MP3 playing is a 'tape-2-CD format' I did some months ago.

I also added this on my homepage:

... just something about this track that I like. I don't know what it is, could be a Brown thing! LOL! No, it could be a TEJANO thing! Maybe it's an Arizona thing!

Hello TAB members and visitors to this message board:

For many years and practically ever since I created my first 10-cent Website with MSN back in the mid 90s, and even though there has been many music improvements, group changes, and trends at times not understood by me, my tejano music goal has not changed at all. That goal has been:

... "to assist La Onda Tejana, making it better for all of us, and just voicing my own advocacy." That has always been priority one for me and that will never change either. Quite frankly my friends and unequivocally, in my heart I know we can still do something to improve our music industry.

Allow me to say that today we have so much media resources for distribution and placement, and if you include a few selected individuals that truly care about our Onda - "and if they would just work cooperatively and professionally for one singular and solitary purpose: La Onda" - I have absolutely no doubt nothing would stop this alliance in achieving the ultimate music goal of unity, and perhaps the following as well:

"We must press forward with our Onda Tejana in a more recurrent basis, and better understand our issues and initiative proposals to further enhance our tejano music today and tomorrow. You can do things to help in your city no matter where you live. Furthermore, we need to improve our business relations within our city and state to draw a much better parallel paradigm with Texas."

To that end, two ultimate achievements will result overall and in time:

We would have better control of our music industry.
It would bring better tejano music entertainment to the most important asset within our Onda: Our people.

All TEJANOmike commentaries written on this Internet Web site link are my own views, beliefs, and observations of the subject matter at hand. While expressing my own free opinionated analysis and conclusive judgment on tejano related matters stated here, I most certainly do not want to disrespect anybody and/or discredit visitors for their own pro and con feedback or criticism. Life goes on.

Some comments date back a few years and may not reflect the present logical beliefs and judgment of our present day.

Choreographer Needed For My Cumbia

Another This 'n That:

In early 2010, I will be releasing a cumbia/rap single from Austin Texas. But for sometime now I've had the idea of creating a "Tejano Cumbia Dance" or routine to go along with the CD single. I am currently looking for some ideas on a good tejano choreography routine and dance that will require three segments:

ONE: The music starts playing and the regular startup dance sequence will initiate until it gets to the bridge of the song or chorus.

TWO: When the bridge starts with, "La Onda Tejana ... " I wanted a choreography change here so that the dancers can move differently and with their hands up in the air a few times; and more movements from left to right, etc.

THREE: On the rap part which is the last part of the cumbia, I am also looking for something different and a routine mixed in with some of today's dances, yet it has to be simply and easy to learn.

That's it, and that's all I want for this new cumbia with all the people on the floor dancing alike and having a little fun too. Anybody out there interested? Any good PHX choreographers out there willing to try it? Anyone want to take a chance at it?

The winner of the Tejano Cumbia Dance will be added to the CD single and credits for the dance. We will be releasing the video also on YouTube showing the dance and how easy it is to learn and fun to do! The links below are clips of the cumbia, "La Onda Tejana"

I have an idea: Why not get together here in PHX and drive over to support Rupert and his fundraiser?, I mean, it's for a very good cause right?! Maybe PeeWee and MaryLu, TEJANOmike, DJ John, Christina and/or Angelica, Uncle Charles, Ray and Laura?, you know, some of us regulars and just head down there to help out.

Anybody has a van that sits 6-7-8 PHX tejanos?!, or we can take 2-3 cars too if we have to! Let's go! Who's up for this crazy idea of mine?! The flyer states it's over at 10:00pm, so we'll be in PHX by 11:30pm and ready to go to work in the morning! Spread the word! Holla bck!

Let's start planning and show Tucson we're big-time-tejano-supporters too!

I would like to take a minute to welcome "NASH" to our TAB, and here is a short introductory bio on him:

A gifted and versatile musician, Victoriano Espinoza - better known as Vick "Nash" Espinoza - developed his talents on the Houston music scene playing guitar and keyboards and singing with local Tejano, Country, and R&B bands.

A seasoned studio musician, Vick's professional experience includes work with Gilley's Enterprises, Gilley's Recording Studio, and Points West Publishing. He spent 10 years on the Nashville music scene immersing himself in the Country music genre.

During this time, he toured with the Marty Martel Show as Musical Director. He co-wrote, arranged, and produced Marty's album, "If This Is Love", which featured songs performed on the Nashville Network and on the Ralph Emery Show, 'Nashville Now'. As a songwriter, Vick's songs have been recorded by Jessy Serrata on, "Better Than Ever" .. Avizo's, "The Power of Friends" .. Marky Lee's, "Antojo de Amor" .. Peligro's CD; and Michael Marquez, "Deseos".

Wow! That New Years Eve weekend ... at the Casino Ballroom on JAN the 2nd with Roger Velasquez, Rudy Palacios, and Jimmy Edward should be a great dance! Hmmm, I'll probably be broke by then, LOL, hello!

... but I wonder who is going from here, I mean, I don't mind going with somebody or I'll drive if needed, whatever. Staying overnight is not a problem either for me, I just want to see all three of them perform. They're in Albuquerque New Mexico this coming weekend!

We'll see since we still got some time to plan things out.
